BARNTON PARISH PLAN
The Barnton Parish Plan Group - independent of the Parish Council - is currently made up of six willing residents and two willing parish councillors, all of whom are committed to the next stage of bringing the Barnton Parish Action Plan to fruition. However, to do this we need to engage the help of residents to deliver the actions. Therefore, if you have some spare time and would like to volunteer for any of the positions/roles identified below, please contact Lynn Gibbon on 01606 784599 or any member of the Plan Group to discuss or register your interest, or leave your details below and you will be contacted.
VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED
Positions are open to all members of the village no matter how old or young, as we hope to reach as broad a range of the community as possible. We require time and a diverse range of skills; from the odd day to assist in planting bulbs, to longer term commitment with the Youth Forum. The amount of time required to be donated would be approximately five hours monthly as a minimum.
SAFER COMMUNITY TEAM
Volunteer team required (min two) to identify ways of increasing residents feeling of safety around the village including looking at:
·lighting and sightlines in alleyways
·reducing groups congregating at Jubilee Corner
·approaching local shops and discussing an increase to 21 for the sale of alcohol
·liaising with police and PCSO on increasing policing, particularly in the evenings and at weekends
YOUTH FORUM
Volunteers (min two) required to form a team to, initially to establish a Youth Forum. This will involve significant research into: rules and regulations, funding available, local support and entail liaising with CWAC, various voluntary groups and local schools. This group will then take responsibility for running the forum and investigating the possibility of finding and setting up a place for them to meet and use as their own:
·keen interest in working with children/ young adults (background in this area useful but not essential)
·willing to submit to a CRB check
·requires a fairly long term commitment; however we would like to hear from people who would just like to be involved with the initial set up stage or alternately just the running the forum
COMMUNITY SPEED GROUP
Volunteers required (min six) to form a team to set up and run a Community Speed Watch. Initially to liaise with police and ensure funding, then undertake speed checks using equipment provided by police / council:
·willing to liaise with police and PCSO
·willing and able to undertake training in protocols and use of equipment
·willing and able to spend up to a half a day on speed check days
COMMUNITY CLEAR UP TEAM
Volunteer Team Leader required to engage sufficient volunteers, set annual dates and arrange for all necessary equipment to undertake cleaning / clearing etc on either a half or full designated days
SENIOR RESIDENTS NETWORK CHAMPION
Volunteer required to set up the ‘Senior Residents Network’ initially envisaged to take the form of having a section in Tunnel Top, promoting clubs/ facilities, useful information. Researching and publicising low cost and free services available for the elderly locally and how they may qualify. The role can develop as the volunteer sees fit as there are no set actions for this section:
·interest in senior citizens and their place in the community
·able to research available support - liaising with Age Concern, PCT, CWAC etc
·ability to take on the role and run with it
·access to and able to use a computer, ability to produce text for publishing in Tunnel Top
ROAD SURVEY TEAM
Volunteer team required (min two) to set up and undertake a survey of the current state of Barnton’s roads and pavements, identifying any problem areas. Also, liaising with the appropriate authorities to ensure repairs are undertaken. Volunteers are required for both setting up the team and ensuring its continued running, as well as carrying out the initial survey. (This could be just in your road or the roads in your immediate vicinity, as much or as little of your time that you can provide).
Team Leader
·ability to liaise with council and highways departments
Surveyors
·able to accurately mark up a plan showing any problem areas
·able to use a digital camera to photograph problems
VILLAGE CENTRE GROUP
Volunteers required (min two) to form a team to set up and run this group. This is a fairly long term project so will involve a certain level of commitment. The tasks will be to initially identify/ establish the best location and identify and approach landowner to gain agreement, funding will then have to be sourced and a proposal/ design put forward:
·knowledge of fund raising would be a great help
·interest in the community and creating a special place
·ability to liaise with council, funding bodies, e.g. National Lottery, and all interested parties etc
BULBS/ TREE PLANTING TEAM
Team Leader required to set up planting days and arrange/ locate bulbs and trees. This will involve discussions with the council and hopefully getting them free of charge, if not, sourcing funding and to engage volunteers to undertake the planting on days as required.
BARNTON DIRECTORY MANAGER
Volunteer required to ensure that the directory is kept up to date and improved over time. This will involve liaising with local businesses and clubs to ensure their entries are always current. Access to a computer and basic word processing skills will be required.
CLIMATE CHANGE CHAMPION
Volunteer required as the village climate change guru. To develop the role as they see fit and to ensure:
·information is published in Tunnel Top on how villagers can reduce their carbon footprint
·discussions take place with the council to investigate the feasibility of turning off the street lights in specific areas after a set time
·reduction in the carbon footprint of businesses
WATERSIDE ASSETS TEAM
Volunteers required (min two) to form a team to promote and improve Barnton’s waterside assets, with the imagination, to develop the possibilities that these great features could offer and the ability to liaise with the necessary authorities e.g. British Waterways and council and to address the following:
·increasing seating at key points
·increasing the number of litter bins
·improving towpaths and access to the riverside and canal
·investigating the possibility of bridleway and cycle links between Anderton and Dutton Locks
·promoting walks and access through leaflets
ACTION PLAN E-SECRETARY
Volunteer to maintain a database of email addresses for people wanting electronic communication in the village and to send out messages, Tunnel Top or other information as required.
